I remember when...

  • Watermelons had seeds
  • Televisions had dials
  • Streets had payphones
  • Computers had floppies
  • Supermarkets had arcade games
  • Only doctors or drug dealers had pagers
  • No one had a cellular phone
  • People wore tube socks
  • I made my girlfriend a mix tape
  • VCRs were amazing
  • Costco clerks read off the SKU numbers
  • Stores called the bank when you wrote a check
  • Macy's used a carbon machine on your credit card
  • McDonald's used styrofoam packages
  • Rabbit ears were on our living room TV
  • The first time I played Frogger at home
  • People thought pegged pants looked cool
  • Taco Bell had a 59¢ menu
  •  I had to hand write my school reports
  • I tried to walk and keep my discman from skipping
It happens to everyone. When they realize time has moved faster than they expected...

20 Signs You're A Lame Superhero

  • One of your best powers is turning into a bucket of water.

  • You're the female version of a real superhero. She-Thing? Seriously?

  • You have an invisible jet plane given to you by the Amazons.

  • You can speak with insects.

  • You can speak with dolphins.

  • You're half vampire.

  • The X-Men couldn't even find a good use for you.

  • You battle eco-villans and worldwide industrialism.

  • Your superhero name, chosen to strike fear into the enemy, includes the word boy.

  • You've got wings. Yeah, with feathers.

  • Your superpower involves a gun. Come on...

  • You let your worst enemy's off with just a warning, so they can kill again.

  • You acquired your powers in the Himalayans.

  • 20 Things I Learned From Star Trek

  • Our mission is to seek out new life and new civilizations in order to make them just like us.

  • The Federation comes in peace. But if you provoke us we'll light you up like a warp core!

  • The functionality of any technology is inversely proportional to to it's urgency of need.

  • There is no crime on Earth, there is also no money. It is a very boring place, which is why we're in space, shooting photon torpedoes at other species.

  • Klingons really like prune juice.

  • Ferengis are the species with the clearest motivations. I might not always agree but I always understand.

  • At some time in the future we do away with physics. Therefore we have no relativity and have replaced it with huge explosions in the vacuum of space. Explosions are cooler than relativity anyway.

  • Borgs are more appealing if they're sexy women in a catsuit and spike heels. So much for the role of feminism in the 24th century.

  • Even though we have phasers and disruptors, It always comes down to the punch!

  • Evil always wears a beard.

  • Fuses where outlawed in the Federation, because everyone likes sparks on the bridge.

  • When in doubt, reverse the polarity. This might also be the reason we did away with fuses...

  • Jettisoning Warp Cores 101. Right after Polarity Reversal Theory at StarFleet tech academy.

  • You can scan and lock onto life signs, unless you've been issued a communicator badge. Then that becomes the sole tracking device.

  • What happens on Risa stays on Risa

  • The universal translator; does it ever make mistakes? "Oh you want to see Remus!! At ease men..."

  • What was Uhura's job again? Can't we just put that on speaker phone?

  • The holodeck is the most deadly form of Federation entertainment

  • Don't screw with the timeline or you might end up with a whole new Star Trek reality.

  • 20 Things I'd Rather Do Than Work

I have a great job. I get to do what I love for a living. Still there are days when working is just not the first thing on my mind. Some days while diagnosing servers and tracking network errors my mind wanders to other places...

  • Checking Facebook for info on your friends latest illness and dinner plans
  • Hope for an office fire drill. I'm on team BLUE!!
  • Search the Internet for people to correct.
  • Coffee time!
  • Burning popcorn in the office microwave
  • Office blood drive. At least you get free snacks...
  • Break out the white board cleaner for a cheap legal drug trip. In a pinch use the sharpie for some note jotting
  • Sleep. It's weird when your body gets tired of sitting in a comfortable chair all day
  • Time off for the dentist. Laughing gas; hello to my new best friend!
  • Search the Internet for pictures of ugly dogs. Woof Woof...
  • Office gossip.. er I mean expressing concern for Laura's hairdressers sobriety
  • Web based training
  • Searching Ebay for that must have vintage broken laser pointer!
  • Insulting Craigslist posters with $5 offers on their exquisite heirloom IKEA bookcases
  • Heating Styrofoam cups up in the office microwave
  • Writing irate informational e-mails to all employees about the dangers of Styrofoam and microwaves
  • A field trip to Marketing to see the beautiful people.
  • Star Wars coloring book time
  • Break out the office Yo-Yo. I usually do this while staring at my white board and feigning deep thought.
  • Hold a meeting to discuss agenda for upcoming meeting.
  • Blogging Anyone?
  • 20 Signs You're A PC Gamer

  • You like a good plot line and can appreciate graphics better than console players.

  • Gaming takes energy. Got Caffeine?

  • When the game is really good losing track of a number of hours or occasionally days is not without precedent

  • Save, save, save. It's the gamers mantra.

  • You can crouch, run backwards while firing and still simultaneously jump and reload

  • You couldn't use an XBOX controller if your life depended on it

  • You know what you frame rate is and have benchmarked your system...several times

  • You've chosen sides, ATI or Nvidia. (And hopefully you didn't pick ATI...)

  • Your mouse hand can get cold or maybe it's going to fall off. Might want to take a break in a hour or two just to find out.

  • Farmville doesn't count as PC gaming

  • Your computer chair is more comfortable then your bed

  • On occasion computers do crash. It's the price we pay for better selection and killer graphics See #4

  • Four hours of gaming is just breaking in your chair

  • If you're an RPG player just choosing the right character can take this long!

  • There's always time for one more quest.

  • Yelling at the screen is part of the game

  • When your eyes glaze over it's time for a Dew break. See #2

  • Your mouse and keyboard are wired.

  • When in doubt, shoot to kill.

  • You fully expect to be doing this when you turn 80
  • 20 Things I Learned From Troubleshooting

  • Do No Harm. You can and will make it worse if you're not careful.

  • Celebrate even small successes. This keeps you sane.

  • Searching the internet for a solution to your problem with a random Microsoft error message is akin to playing Russian roulette with yourself. Your odds pretty much suck.

  • Everything is fixable. Sometimes that means thinking outside the box or other times it means dropping that box in the ocean.

  • Between conspiracy and incompetency, bet on incompetency. More often than not, it's something stupid (or someone).

  • Whatever you do, don't temp fate. Fate will mop the floor with you.

  • If at any time you say, "Piece of Cake." You're doomed. You should just as well paint a target on your chest.

  • Ask the obvious questions, even if they sounds stupid. "Did you turn it off, then on again?"

  • Good troubleshooting is like good art, so don't be upset if people don't understand it.

  • It is possible to solve a problem and not realize if for an hour or more. This has happened, but mostly its the other way around.

  • Which means never take credit for coincidence. Just because a problem disappeared, doesn't mean you fixed it. Congratulations can turn to blame in a blink of an eye.

  • You might be surprised how many hours of downtime can be traced back to someone updating a Windows server.

  • Breadcrumbs. Remember what you've changed. If you tell an irate manger that you can't retrace your steps, don't be surprised when you wind up in the oven.

  • Never give an ETR. See #6

  • Caffeine, Caffeine, Caffeine. And then once more just in case.

  • Diagram, Diagram Diagram. Whether on paper, whiteboard or in a pool of your own bitter tears. Draw the problem out.

  • While troubleshooting my fingers look like a dry-erase-Mardi-Gras-celebration. Minus the music, nakedness, hangovers and general 'good time'.

  • The solution is rarely worth the effort. It's true. One mis-checked box after 5 hours of work can be a little less than gratifying.

  • Managers want explanations. Lie to them if you want. They wouldn't understand anyway.

  • Relax, you've earned your pay for the day. Go blog or something...
  • 20 Things I Learned From Marriage

  • As a single person, you never imagined you could have a fight over a tube of toothpaste.

  • You don't have to recall everything you've said. Once you're married someone else will do that for you!

  • Flowers can fix almost anything. For everything else there's superglue.

  • Marriage is compromise. No where is this more apparent than while watching television

  • Will tonight be Norm making a drop leaf table or stomaching three hours of Gone with the Wind?

  • Beauty is fleeting, but a good cook is forever prized!

  • All the cute quirks while dating will morph into the unbearable habits after marriage!

  • Saying "you're right" is harder than saying, "I was wrong."

  • Before marriage you were right much more often.

  • A twin bed was fun at first but cold feet get old pretty fast.

  • Invest in a comfortable couch. Trust me on this.

  • Before marriage I had zero clue what women went through to "get ready"

  • Nor was I aware of 'which blouse went with which shoes"

  • On the flip side my wife said, "If I'd have known how gross boys were, I never would have married you."

  • Communication is important. Even if she wants to talk at 2:00am

  • Understanding is more important than a solution.

  • Until this sinks in, see #3

  • You buy wedding rings so you can recall what it was like to have money.

  • Life is so much more fun if you have someone to share it with.

  • I'd do all over again at the drop of a hat!
  • 20 Things I've Learned From Dieting

  • Dieting is the direct opposite of everything else in life. It's easier to gain, than it is to lose.

  • If you're not allowed to eat it on your diet, then it's all you'll want.

  • kitchen tables are suppose to be a place of joy, not weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  • Exercising builds muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat. Which means it's possible to eat right, exercise and gain at your next weigh in. Breaking your scale isn't the solution

  • My scale and I have a love/hate relationship. It loves to hate me.

  • We're going to need another scale...

  • When on a diet, you'll find that there's a fast food joint on every single street corner in town.

  • Even gross fast food sounds better that a low calorie microwaved boxed meal. Not surprising really.

  • If your portion of food is bigger than the palm of your hand, then it might actually fill you up.

  • Counting calories. It's like gambling for dieters. "Hit me with a string cheese!"

  • I've been on a diet for three weeks and all I've lost is my sanity.

  • Nonfat, no-whip, sugar free tall mochas, aren't worth $4.50.

  • If you plan on cheating, do yourself a favor and don't weigh in for a couple of days. We just bought a new scale...

  • Extra cheese doesn't count, if ordered on a vegetarian pizza.

  • While dieting, the world seems packed with skinny people eating hamburgers and fries.

  • Do what I do. Wish them fat. I know it works because someone did it to me 13 years ago...

  • Comfortable jeans really are their own reward.

  • Even if it's only because you dare not wash them!

  • I like mushrooms, bell peppers and tomatoes but lets not pretend it wouldn't taste SO MUCH better on a pizza

  • I'm not overweight, I'm just prepping for an extended Antarctic expedition...but we're gonna need more dogs for the sled.
  • 20 Things Learned As Sys-Admin Repost

  • “Nothing’s wrong with the system” is always the first line of defense.

  • The longer you do this the less intelligent that users seem.

  • It always works on my computer.

  • I’d explain how I fixed it but you wouldn’t understand, so I just say “SYS-ADMIN USE STRONG MAGIC!”

  • Trust me, you’re doing it wrong.

  • <work> </joy> If you get it. It’s funny.

  • I’m not reading your email for fun; I’m checking the servers load.

  • Overhead lights wash out the monitor.

  • Walls are for your protection, indoors is where it’s safe.

  • I send Bill Gates a Christmas card every year. Poor code pays my mortgage.

  • Backups are never corrupted unless the data might actually be needed.

  • GUI’s are for the helpdesk and babies.

  • Windows? Reboot.

  • Declining social skills are part of the job.

  • Never trust a tan Systems Administrator

  • Coffee, Coffee, Coffee. This cannot be overstated.

  • The less rights users have, the better for everyone.

  • Managers should never be allowed to touch systems. This is just borrowing trouble.

  • Calling tech support means admitting you are fallible. Avoid this at all costs.

  • The answer is “No, I didn’t change anything” even if you have to lie through your teeth to say it.

  • 20 Things I Learned From The Sales Meeting

  • I doesn't have to work, as long as it's pretty

  • Welcome to the meeting. Let the lies begin.

  • PowerPoint is proof of functionality

  • #15 in sales handbook: "If you're not positive, 'Yes it does that!'"

  • No sales meeting is complete without a Paradigm Shift.

  • Sales Engineers. The ugly truthful side of the sales teams. "My SE is sick...don't mind him."

  • Free pens and coffee cups. The real reason we go to sales meetings.

  • When pitching to a network engineer, "This product keeps the bad things out" might need to be expanded on.

  • Why do I continue to ask questions when I know there are no straight answers?

  • #45 in sales handbook: "When cornered use the phrase 'Heuristic learning software aptitude'" and continue.

  • "Are there pie chart generated reports?" The question your manager asks.

  • When in doubt, don't clarify, confuse. See #5

  • The inevitable question from the clients "When is SP1 coming out?"

  • In sales pitches there is no mention of CPU or memory or bandwidth usage.

  • Me: "How much bandwidth?" Sales Guy: "I think it needs at least a 128k circuit!"

  • The upgrade to 11.03 solves the problems created in 11.02. 11.04 creates troubles we will not be able to resolve until you upgrade to 12.0.

  • Why is it you haven't upgraded from 11.01 again?

  • Sports analogies don't fly in a room full of geeks. "What's a forward lateral?"

  • The best part of the sales meeting is the adjournment!
  • 20 Things I've Learned From Thanksgiving

  • Turkey size? Go big.

  • A healthy Thanksgiving diner is a creation of the devil.

  • The table space is precious. Don't waste it on foul food.

  • Stuffing. It's not just a suggestion.

  • If it weren't for family, Thanksgiving would be perfect.

  • You only get one vacation day for Christmas, but two for Thanksgiving.

  • Why? Because your pants don't fit and the management wouldn't approve 'Naked Friday.'

  • After the meal, moving is optional

  • Any one stupid enough to get up at 5:00AM the next day, can have the deals. I'm sleeping till noon.

  • Black Friday is also named for the death of millions of bathroom scales.

  • Personal trainers hate Thanksgiving

  • Football cannot be avoided. It's football or dishes, so football it is.

  • Pumpkin pie is horrible. We only eat it once a year so our mouths can forget what it taste likes.

  • Deep fried turkey? It should be a national sporting event!

  • Green bean casserole. See #3

  • Gravy goes with everything.

  • Meat, starch, carbs, starch, gravy, starch. Repeat

  • I see turkey and mash potato sandwiches in your future.

  • When in doubt, add cranberry sauce.

  • Gluttony = Thankfulness

  • Have a Happy Thanksgiving!! From KludgeSpot

20 Things I Learned From Training

  • There are two types of training, bad training and needed training. I've never witnessed good training

  • Training instructors are rarely the cream of the crop

  • When in training it's considered polite not to fall asleep

  • This is sometimes unavoidable

  • Training instructor jokes, laughing only encourages more. AKA Don't feed the bears

  • Trainers who know anything are few and far between. Don't bet that yours will.

  • Training input survey. The, 'Will I ever see this trainer again?' gamble.

  • There is always one person who will never get

  • To quote a movie, "The cows could program the VCR by now!"

  • This boob is also the most vocal. Please put your hand down...

  • They are also the best source of material typo's. How many days is this again?

  • Pick your lab partners carefully. Four days with "Ned the Halitosis Factory" is far from bearable.

  • Lab exercises...A simple game of follow the directions, and snicker at your frustrated neighbors

  • Bored yet? If you didn't bring your blackberry, you could always count ceiling tiles. See #3

  • Smokers have a training advantage... Time for another break

  • The best part of training is travel

  • How do I make three beers look like a legitimate dinner receipt?

  • The my favorite words uttered in training, "looks like we'll be finished early."

  • Online training, all the pain and none of the benefits. AKA the mangers favorite training.

  • All things being equal, even bad day training is better than good day working.
  • 20 Things That I Just Don't Get

  • Girl colors. Red, blue and green. After that, I'm totally out of my league.

  • Running. Unless someone is chasing me, this seems like a pointless endeavor.(with apologies to Mr. Parrish)

  • Holding the bacon. If you're going to get cheese and avocado on your burger then order fries and a side of fried zucchini. then the bacon is the least of your concerns.

  • Sporting Stats. If the game was so boring that the only thing to talk about is someones RBIs' then it's time to find a new hobby.

  • Sun Tan Lotion. A useful product, but scary as hell. You have zero clue what you're rubbing on your face!

  • Reality TV. I want to escape reality, that's why I watch TV. Now what am I suppose to do?!

  • Penny Loafers. Are you really suppose to put pennies in there? Honestly, it looks pretty strange.

  • Wheat-grass shots. I've never seen someone smile while drinking these. There has to be an easier way!

  • Style. By this I simply mean, buying something not because you like the way it looks, but only because someone else does. Do they then have to buy what you like?

  • Pulpy orange juice. If I had wanted to chew it, I wouldn't have poured it in my glass.

  • 2001: A Space Odyssey. I will never understand this movie. Period.

  • Dvorak keyboard layout. What's the matter? Too good to use what's printed on the keys?

  • Macintosh Computers. Sorry Apple folks, I'm just not into overspending for a logo, and once less mouse button. And yes, it burns me up how slick the iPhone really is!

  • Regulating others. Save your offspring, if someone wants to do something really stupid, we should let them. Either they'll learn or not. If you can't change them, you're certainly not going to stop them.

  • Shoe collecting. It's like the smallest part of your attire. Why do you need thirty-eight pairs of shoes?

  • Chewing tobacco. Nothing says, "I don't want to make eye contact", like a giant lip buldge, and a brown drip down your chin!

  • Giving up caffeine. Is there a shortage? Then what's the problem?

  • Blogs. Who's so self absorbed that they think others care about their opinions! Wait...

  • You own this poster.

  • You wrote this blog post.

  • You need help... Please get some.
  • 20 Things I learned From Microsoft

  • Microsoft Windows - "Crashing hard drives and bogging down boot times since 1985."

  • We have the solution, but only if we caused the problem.

  • We don't have to care, we're Microsoft.

  • The Windows registry is a place of Dark Magic. Avoid it if you can.

  • Windows. It looks like an Apple, but without all that nasty "Ease of use" and "Functionality" garbage.

  • If you do have trouble (and you will) just reboot.

  • Need to reboot? Click 'Start'.

  • Sorry but you're just another cog in the vast Microsoft cult. Reboot anyone?

  • There are some days when you spend more time rebooting, than working.

  • They're called weekdays.

  • Never upgrade until you have too.

  • You're gonna need more hard drive space. Oh! And more memory...a better graphic card...a bigger screen for all your widgets...

  • No upgrade goes as planned. This lesson can only be learned by doing.

  • You should have waited for SP2.

  • Windows in a breeding ground for viruses. See item 3.

  • It's possible to have more viruses than legitimate software.

  • Once cleaned your machine runs just as poorly as it did before you had the virus.

  • So how can you tell if your PC's infected?

  • Is it running Windows? Then yeah, you've got a virus.

  • If it works well, then it ain't Microsoft.

  • (typed on Linux using Firefox.)

20 Things I Learned From Outages

  • Now is a perfect time to panic.

  • No matter what you may think, everyone knows it's your fault.

  • Everyone is always losing 'thousands of dollars' during outages.

  • When the network is down, you burn calories at an exponential rate.

  • People who haven't worked in the last year are suddenly desperate to get busy.

  • How many managers can you cram into your workspace?

  • When the network is down, you'll have your answer.

  • Manager love to take up space and offer valuable 'suggestions'.

  • Ignoring these 'suggestions' proves you don't have what it takes for management.

  • It also means the network might be fixed sometime soon.

  • No matter what, payroll gets fixed first. There is no exception to this rule.

  • The answer to all other inquires is, "Yea, I'm working on it."

  • Time passes in two modes during outages. 'The crawl' and 'freaky lighting mode'.

  • Freaky lighting mode is while you are troubleshooting.

  • The crawl occurs after you think you've fixed it.

  • More than likely, it's worse than you think.

  • Never say 'it's fixed.' This is a sure sign you have failed.

  • Once you send the 'all clear email', is when the second shoe will drop.

  • For some reason you never expect that second shoe. No matter how many times you've done this.

  • Get comfortable. You are probably going to be here for a while.
  • 20 Things I Learned From Life

  • Between conspiracy and incompetency, bet on incompetency.

  • There is no such thing as extra cash, unless it belongs to someone else.

  • Life without video games is not a life worth living.

  • If your are a man, avoid all conversation in said restrooms. Get in, do your business get out. If you are a woman, ignore this advice completely.

  • Think before you speak. Idle words can sometimes cause the most harm.

  • If the above is not possible, then at least try and be witty about it. That way you can pass it off as a good joke and the offended person as someone with no 'sense of humor'.

  • If you find you aren't suited for any honest professions, try your hand at politics. Everyone loves a liar and a cheat.

  • Plant at least one tree in your life. This means you can drive an SUV with a 'Love Your Mother Earth' bumper sticker without feeling guilty.

  • It's got it's own cake.

  • People don't bother coffee drinkers early in the morning. They know better.

  • Everyone needs one vice. Coffee is mine. Well...one of mine. Well...the one I'm not giving up!

  • If I can pay $50 for a tank of gasoline, I can afford $1.90 for a cup of coffee.

  • When Starbuck takes over the world, we'll all be required to drink it anyway. Why wait?
  • 20 Things I've Learned From Blogging

  • There are days when blogging is less like recreation and more like work.

  • Updates are expected. Best of luck with that.

  • Originality is harder than you think given the vastness of the Net.

  • If you're looking for Pulitzer prize writing, skip the blogs. If you're looking for vast collections of Gothic poetry, then you've come home.

  • Everyone has a blog. Even grandma Ethel.

  • Grandma Ethel's blog has a better Google Pagerank than yours.
